Since their launch in 1976, effects of nutritional green-lipped mussel supplement products on osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), asthma, and cancer have been studied in various clinical trials and discussed in numerous review papers (Brien et al., 2008, Doggrell, 2011, Gibson and Gibson, 1998, Gibson et al., 1980, Lau et al., 2004 and Sukumaran et al., 2010). Within its main field of application, i.e. in patients suffering from OA or RA, outcomes of most studies have proven a reduced amount of pain and stiffness related to the intake of mussel preparations ( Halpern, 2000). Apart from orally applied Lyprinol® capsules, topical preparations, such as skin cream containing mussel lipids, also seem to be effective against OA and RA ( Chandler, 2005a, Chandler, 2005b, Kenneth et al., 2009, Mulye and Assoulin, 2012 and Williams and Sansom, 2008).
PCSO-524™ patients showed a statistically significant improvement compared with patients who took fish oil. There was an 89% decrease in their pain symptoms and 91% reported an improved quality of life. Patients treated with fish oil showed significantly less improvement and a greater level of physical discomfort during the study. These results suggest that PCSO-524™ might offer a potential alternative complementary therapy with no side effects for OA patients.
We report on the in vivo activity of F-acids, confirming that the lipid extract of the green-lipped mussel includes an unstable fatty acid that is more effective than EPA.
